Get Crisper Action Shots Every parent wants to capture the action of young children as they zip across a soccer field or ride their bikes for the first time. Many frustrated parents have asked me why their images are blurry or out-of-focus. Here are two simple techniques that will help you get a clearer picture of the action.
Higher shutter speed Set your camera to its TV (Time Value) or S (Shutter) mode. This mode will let you select the camera's shutter speed. The higher the shutter speed, the more your camera will "freeze" the action. Start by choosing a speed of 125 or higher. If there is not enough light, the camera's meter may blink or show a "low" warning in the viewfinder. If this happens, increase the ISO setting on your camera to 400 ISO, 800 ISO or higher as your camera permits.
Panning

If you are shooting action that is moving across the field of vision in front of you, you can "pan" the camera to track the movement. This will work for a child running down a field or a race car going around a track. Put your finger on the shutter button and focus on the subject, then keep the subject in the center of the viewfinder as it moves in front of you. While moving, press down on the shutter to take a picture. If done correctly the background will be blurred but the subject will be in sharp focus.
